The big fat red line makes appearance on The Biggest Loser!

Having watched this show for a number of seasons, I simply cannot get over the amount of inspiration I take from The Biggest Loser.  I sometimes get fed up with contestants, I find myself mimicking them when they cry, “Oh boohoohoo,” I say to the TV.  Yet when its all over and the shit hits the fan, I always find myself trying to keep from breaking down.  Since the begining of this year, I have been back in the gym as a direct result of this show. Well the show and disgust with my nasty body as I would have said while in the Marine Corps. I hit the gym HARD 5 days a week!  Yet I watch this show week after week in utter amazement at the work these folks do.  I mean it is an inspiration to those of us out there who are seriously into their health and losing weight.  Well myself anyways…

Whew, whatever that was for, lets move on with the events of last nights episode!  The first thing up for the evening was the big news that for the first time EVER in Biggest Loser history, two people would be going home this week!  Not only would the contestants have to worry about falling below the dreaded yellow line, this week the contestants would have the added pressure of not falling below the RED line!  So the red line was the line separating the contestant with the lowest percentage of weight loss for the week from the rest of the contestants.  This player would be sent packing as soon as the weigh-in was over without any chances to plead their case whatsoever, fall below the red line, go home.  Simplicity at its finest.  It has always been my viewpoint that The Biggest Loser was the easiest game to win when game play strategy became involved.  Basically lose the weight every week to stay above the yellow line and you are always going to stay in it right up until you win the game!  So same goes for this week, lose weight, stay on the ranch.  But people, let me tell you, when there are 8 people left in the competition and 3 of them will be up for elimination come weigh in, guess what, you’re in for a helluva time to try and keep your butt above that yellow line!

The first event of the evening was a pop challenge in which the contestants had to fill up a small barrel with tennis balls stuck on a high wall with velcro.  Winning this competition would give you a one pound advantage at this weeks weigh in.  Allen powered through this as typically is the case in anything involving stamina and will to win competitions this season, the guy is a freaking machine, plain and simple.  Rebecca and Rudy did manage to put up a good fight though, keeping it remarkably close, but Allen was just too relentless never slowing down, just keeping things steady as she goes.

After the pop challenge, contestants began discussing the implications of the red line.  There was an obvious recognition between all of them that they were basically two teams, the old versus the young, four versus four.  The group that lost a member to the red line were going to be subjected to the whim of the other group when it came to voting for the 2 contestants who fell beneath the yellow line.  Noone could even think about the possibility of all three contestants below the yellow line coming from the same group.  The old folks did recognize the danger and committed to keeping all four of them above the yellow line.  Tensions were going to be running high this week!

When the news was broken to Bob and Jillian they were in shock as well never having seen this happen in the 8 seasons that the Biggest Loser has been airing.  As is normally the case the two offered general words of encouragement but let go their real feelings once outside away from the contestants.  Jillian was devastated by the possibility that Shay could be sent packing this week.  She was adamant that they both focus everything they had into ensuring that Shay not fall below that red line and face instant elimination.  Bob conceded that while Shay did need to stay on the ranch more so then the rest of the contestants he was there to give each and every one of them everything he had to give!

The training was the typical brutal biggest loser fare!  Jillian did beat the hell outta Shay though, not accepting tears, not accepting anything!  At one point Danny had fallen over with exhaustion and pain.  Jillian sidelined him for the day but Bob intervened and put him back to work.  Who knows whether Jillian was trying to slow Danny’s progress to help out Shay, doubt it the woman is just too extreme to let anyone out of a workout unless she truly felt an honest need.

Later on, the teams all got to visit the greatest show on earth for a special circus act challenge called jumping through hoops for weigh-in immunity.  The contestants each had a hoop with their name on it and a scoreboard.  They were in the game until their hoop had 100 points.  Points were added to their scoreboard each time another contestant chose to jump through their hoop.  The young team quickly went after Liz since they all figured she’d need the immunity the most.  The old guys went after Amanda since she was such a quick hoop jumping demon.  The contestants boiled down to Shay, Rudy, Danny remaining.  At the start of the contest, Rudy told Shay if it came down to them they’d be hoop buddies.  Shay took it to mean it was them two until the end.  Well when it came down to it, Rudy began jumping through Shay’s hoop with Danny.  Shay was pissed off!  Rudy and her both bickered while Shay got eliminated and who can really cast a stone here.  It is a game, you do what it takes to further your chances at winning.  And in this case, Rudy winds up winning the challenge and the grand prize that came with it, immunity on this weeks weigh-in!

The last chance workout was unlike any ever shown in a trapeze studio.  Bob did his best to kill the contestants, but when he finally released the competitors back to the ranch they had only just begun.  Jillian took up the reigns scorned their little fun field trip and brought on the pain for the conclusion of their last chance workout and preparation for their weigh ins!

The weigh ins came bringing with them a somber, nervous mood.  Everyone knowing that one of them were leaving before they had all left the building for the evening.  The weigh-in results were amazing.  There is no other word for it, these folks worked their asses off this week and the numbers proved it!  First up was Rudy, losing 8 lbs for a 2.14% weight loss with his immunity he was feeling good feeling a strong week coming up.  Shay was next asking for at least a 12 lb loss but when it came down to it she banged out 17 lbs for 100 lb total weight loss to date, this was a new record for the fastest to 100 for a woman!  Awesome job Shay!   Amanda lost 5 for 2.42%, Rebecca lost 10 for 4.57%, Danny lost 17 for 5.11%, Allen lost 10 with 4.35% with his 1lb advantage for winning the pop challenge, Liz lost 12 for 5.5% putting her in 1st, and finally Daniel lost 5 lbs for 1.92% weight lost putting him the unlucky one below the red line!  Daniels trip was over for the 2nd time around.  Its always sad to see one of the Biggest Losers go home but this week there was still more blood to flow, there were still two contestants below the yellow line so the rest of them made their way to figure out who else to send home.

Both Shay and Amanda were below the yellow line.  It was amazing that Shay, busting the record for the quickest lady to lose 100 lbs with a 17 lb weight loss was below the yellow line in the first place.  But lets face it, that just goes to show how hard everyone was working for that place above the yellow line this week.  Her and Amanda both laid it on thick with the tears, emotions, and honest opinions as to why they should stay on the ranch.  Shay obviously had a long way to go, while Amanda refused to quit fighting. I applaud both of these ladies for their drive to stay on board the show and keep their chances at winning and weight loss alive.

After the show I think the best after shots of both Daniel and Shay were on the the Jay Leno show.  Daniel and Ross Mathews both fit into Daniel’s old T-shirt!
